A study has proved the possibility of Metals in herbal medicines. The news must be a hard below to many who consider herbal medicines as the safest bet to combat illness.
However, the good news is that the Metals present in herbal medicines may not prove harmful for health. The news was affirmed by a recent study conducted by Sastra University. Researchers from center for Advanced Research in Indian System of Medicine (CARISM) have questioned the scientific that appeared in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) in December 2004.
Herbal products are famous in America and article has raised concerns about the export of these products outside India.
Around $62 billion is estimated in global market for herbal products. According to the Dean of CARISM, Victor Rajamickam, the authors of JAMA article had conducted study upon 14 Ayurvedic formulations that were manufactured in India. The study apparently revealed certain amounts of presence of metals such as mercury, arsenic and lead in herbal medicines.
They had actually failed to analyze the different forms by which the elements were bound.
It is specified now that the final product in Bhasmas & Rasa yogas are different from the raw materials since they would be transformed to therapeutic compounds by different processes such as detoxification, trituration & healing. Hence the presence of free elements in herbal medicines would not cause any damage, as apprehended by the authors.
